Malaria


Malaria - Plasmodium vivax/P.falciparum/P.ovale/P.malariae
Ø  Protozoan, non motile (Sporozoa)
Ø  Virulence:  Intracellular parasite - invades RBC's, liver
Ø  Transmission:  Bite of infected Anopheles mosquito
Ø  Complex life cycle - part in mosquito, part in human liver, RBC's
Ø  Disease:  Release of parasites & toxic substances from ruptured RBC's causes high fever, chills, vomiting, severe headaches.  Occurs in approx. 3-day cycles.
Ø  Identification:  peripheral blood smear; Observation parasite in RBC's
